Those Who Show Up

This time of year we hear political activists proclaiming that “The world is run by those who show up.” Contrary to the religion of nationalism it’s God who runs the world. Nebuchadnezzar learned this lesson the hard way. He had foolishly boasted,

Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my might and power and for the glory of my majesty? (Daniel 4:20).

Yet the proud king was forced to eat grass like a beast to teach him that the Most High is indeed sovereign over the kingdoms of men, and He gives them to whomever He wills (Daniel 4:25). Here is the difficult lesson that Nebuchadnezzar learned:

The Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone He wishes and sets over them the lowliest of men (Daniel 4:17).

Don’t believe a word of it: the world is not run by those who show up. Running the world is firmly in God’s sovereign hand. Let’s not be so arrogant as to think that He’s about to give it up at the ballot box.

  1. Loosening, or relaxing our grip must be a comical lesson for Father by now.
