God’s Outsiders: The Called-Out Ones (A Biblical Look at God’s Ecclesia), Part 17

The Church in Your House

There are four “church in your house” type phrases found in Paul’s epistles. These phrases are not insignificant. In fact, it is obvious that God determined to emphasize them in His Word.

“… the church that is in their house” (Romans 16:5).
“… the church that is in their house” (I Corinthians 16:19).
“… the church which is in his house” (Colossians 4:15).
“… the church in your house” (Philemon :2).

This basic Pauline truth should not be overlooked. It was quite simple: converted households were the natural expression of the Body of Christ.

The home has always been the center of all of God’s earthly plans and purposes, whether God is ministering through Israel or the Body of Christ. In the dispensation of the grace of God, the home is the embodiment of God’s church (the ecclesia). Thus Paul’s expression was, even unto the end of his writings, “the church in your house.” The ecclesia is clearly domestic in nature; it is not institutional.
