The Church in Ruins (Brief Thoughts On II Timothy), Part 6

Promise of Life in Christ Jesus

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus (II Timothy 1:1).

How amazing it is that a man sentenced to die would start off talking about life! Still, Paul knew his source of life: “the promise life which is in Christ Jesus.” The person of Lord Jesus Christ was his hope! He was the promise of life! Christ was Paul’s Life and is ours as well. “Christ, Who is our life …” (Colossians 3:4).

This promise of life finds its fulfillment in resurrection. There lies the believer’s hope against “the sentence of death” which resides upon all of us.

But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God Who raises the dead (II Corinthians 1:9).

Our trust is not “in ourselves.” It is “in God Who raises the dead.” The demonstration and assurance of that hope is in the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

… He has given assurance unto all men, in that He has raised Him from the dead (Acts 17:31).

Herein lies “the promise of life”… even to an old man facing execution – it is “Christ Jesus!”
