The Bearing of the Earthly Teaching Ministry of Jesus Christ on the Body of Christ Today

For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope (Romans 15:4).

There are certain things which are common in all dispensations. Even though Christ’s early teaching ministry was to Israel, and that He confirmed the prophetic promises to them, we may make application of it just as we would any other teachings of the Old Testament. Just as with Old Testament teaching, we must always remember that while all Scripture is written for us, it is not all written to us, nor is it all about us.

In the “Gospels” (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) Christ’s earthly teachings were to Israel, just as in Paul’s letters (Romans – Philemon) Christ’s heavenly teaching ministry is to the Body of Christ, for Christ later in His heavenly ministry gave to Paul “the revelation of the mystery,” which is the foundation for truth in our day.

We do not know the Lord Jesus Christ the way that Israel did. We do not know him “after the flesh” (i.e., physically).

Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we Him no more (II Corinthians 5:16).

Now, in His ministry through Paul, we know Christ in a whole new way – a spiritual way – as the risen, ascended, glorified Lord, Who is now seated on the Father’s right hand. Paul’s words are the heavenly teaching ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ:

If any man think himself to be … spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord (I Corinthians 14:37).

Instead of confirmation of a covenant message to Israel, Jesus Christ is now – through Paul – teaching a free-grace message to all mankind; one that reveals “the unsearchable riches of Christ” (Ephesians 3:8) – “the riches of His grace” (Ephesians 1:7; 2:7).
