Joy – The Essence of Divine Life

For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost (Romans 14:17).

Along with righteousness and peace, joy is the very essence of divine life flowing forth from “the happy God.” It is what the domain (kingdom) of God is about – JOY.

Filled with All Joy by Faith

Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost (Romans 15:13).

God wants His children to be happy. He works to fill our lives with joy. Not just any joy, but HIS Own joy; and if His marvelous joy was not enough, He works to fill our lives with ALL His joy – in all its fullness. His joy is “unspeakable and full of glory” (I Peter 1:8).

How does He accomplish this? He does so through the simple means of faith – “in believing.” Thus Paul speaks of the “joy of faith” (Philippians 1:25).

We look to Him as our source of joy. We trust Him in the basic issues of life. We believe Him over all else. Circumstances and feelings press hard upon us, but we trust Him over them all!

Paul knew and lived this magnificent truth.

… I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation (II Corinthians 7:4).

He taught us the true power of God in this respect:

Strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness (Colossians 1:11).

David wrote to Israel,

… Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning (Psalm 30:5).

It is not that we will not experience heartache, sadness, and grief. Rather, it is that He is the joy that dawns upon our circumstances. He is our “bright and morning star” (Revelation 22:16) that brings true joy to the darkest of our nights so that we, with Paul, have the Lord’s joy even in longsuffering and tribulation.

Joy Is a Fruit of God’s Spirit

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy (Galatians 5:22).

The fruit which God’s Spirit produces is manifold, and joy is preceded in the divine lineup only by love, which is the greatest. The product of the life of God in humanity is joy! In looking into the face of religion one might be led to think that the life of God was somberness, grimness and gloominess; but it is indeed joy!

Paul’s Ministry of Joy

Paul’s ministry was about helping others to be truly happy. What a wonderful privilege to follow Paul in such a divine undertaking.

We do so by freeing their faith from the bondage of religious dominion!

Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand (II Corinthians 1:24).
